For years, your dermatologist has been telling you to use sunscreen regularly to prevent aging. But the funny thing is, if you're like most people, you've opted for sexier, more expensive and less effective creams and potions.
Recently, doctors in Australia designed a study to motivate sunscreen use. The Wall Street Journal, June 3rd, describes a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, demonstrating that people instructed to apply sunscreen every day showed 24 percent less skin aging, as measured by lines and coarseness of the skin, than those told to use the cream as they usually do.

     Though we have known for a long time that sunscreen might prevent skin aging, this study provides the first hard evidence. The designers of the study had a hidden agenda: through an appeal to vanity, their goal was to prevent skin cancer. Large, randomized trials have not been done before simply because they're difficult to arrange and expensive.
The study, funded by the Australian government in an anti-cancer initiative, included 903 adults under 55, living in Nambour, Australia, which is near the country's Sunshine Coast. Young participants were chosen so that results didn't reflect natural aging.

     All participants were given sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15+. Half were instructed to apply the sunscreen daily to exposed areas, reapplying after water immersion, heavy sweating or several hours spent outdoors, while half were told to use it as they normally would.
By the end of the study 77 percent of those told to use sunscreen daily were using it at least three to four days a week, compared with 33 percent of the control group.
Researchers took silicone impressions of the backs of participants' hands at the beginning of the study and after 4.5 years. Evaluators then graded the patterns of lines and skin coarseness on the hand impressions on a scale of one to six. The damage seen on the surface of the skin reflects tissue damage underneath the skin. They found reduced skin damage from UV rays, which also translates to a lower risk of skin cancer.

Protect yourself
• If you're young, your sunburn may put you at risk for skin cancer decades later.
• Buy a broad-spectrum sunscreen, protecting against both UVA and UVB ray that has an SPF of 30 or higher to reduce the risk of early skin aging and skin cancer.
• Products claiming water resistance must say how long you can expect to get that protection while swimming or sweating, either 40 minutes or 80 minutes.
• Sunscreens can no longer be called "sunblocks" or be labeled as "waterproof" or "sweatproof."
• Finally, slather sunscreen on heavily.
If you already have sun damage, consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon for remedies and start using sunscreen religiously.

What Can Breast Reconstruction Surgery Really Do?
Breast reconstruction has some definite benefits, but it also has limitations. Your satisfaction will depend heavily on whether the outcome meets your expectations, so being honest (with both yourself and your doctor) is important. Additionally, one of the most important things you can do to prepare yourself is to know what to expect.
The main physical benefit of breast reconstruction surgery is the restoration of the appearance of the chest while wearing clothes or swimsuits. Psychologically, it can make patients feel more womanly or more complete. The reconstructed breast, however, will not look like a real one once the clothes come off. It also will not have the sensitivity of the original, and there may be minor scarring following the procedure. It’s crucial to understand that the reconstruction is largely cosmetic, and cannot restore your original breasts.

Should Breast Reconstruction Be Done During Another Procedure or Afterwards?
In most cases, breast reconstruction is done to rebuild a breast after a mastectomy. This means that there may be an opportunity to do the reconstruction during the mastectomy itself. That, however, isn't always the best thing to do.
According to the American Cancer Society, immediate breast reconstruction – reconstruction that is done or started during the mastectomy operation – can prevent the new tissue from being damaged by radiation or scarring. This can produce a better appearance in the reconstructed breast. However, procedures done at this time carry a higher risk of necrosis – the loss of tissue due to the death of the cells.

Delayed breast reconstruction, on the other hand, has a lower risk of necrosis but tends to produce a result that doesn't look quite as good as that provided by the immediate option. However, women still undergoing radiation should wait: radiation can damage the new breast, so it's best to build it after the treatments are completed.

There are several factors that go into a decision of whether or not to perform breast reconstruction surgery, and if so, what preparations need to be done. Here are some of the most pressing factors to keep in mind:

• Your overall health. If you are in poor condition, you may need to wait until your general health improves before you can have any surgery that isn't absolutely necessary.
• Your habits. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and other such things can slow healing and increase the risk of complications. Your doctor may insist that you wait until you have stopped doing these things for a couple of months before performing the breast reconstruction.

• Whether you want more surgery. Some women choose to delay or even avoid breast reconstruction surgery simply because they don't want to go through another operation.
• Risk factors. All surgery has risk factors. In the case of breast reconstruction, one of the biggest risk factors is necrosis (cell death). There is also the chance that you won't like what the final result looks like.
• Whether you want the breasts to match. Ensuring that both breasts are the same size may require operating on the healthy breast to enlarge or shrink it.

With these things in mind, you have a good foundation of things to consider when deciding whether to have breast reconstruction surgery. Consult with your doctors and a plastic surgeon to discuss the details and determine which, if any, procedure is best for you.

How many treatments will I need?

What parts of the body does Thermage CPT treat?
Thermage CPT can effectively and safely treat skin on most body parts, including face, eyes, tummy, arms, hands, thighs, and buttocks.

What skin condition does Thermage CPT treat?
Thermage CPT helps to tighten loose skin. It can also temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.

How many treatments will I need?
Thermage CPT is a single treatment. Results develop over a period of 6 months after the procedure is completed and results usually last around 2 years although this greatly depends on your skin’s condition, aging, and lifestyle.

How long does the procedure take?
We will give you oral pain medicine to relax you 1 ½ hours before the procedure begins. The actual procedure usually takes at least 1 hour. For larger body parts, it will take longer. Be sure to have someone drive you home. We can not give you the medicine if you do not have a driver.

How does the treatment work?
Thermage CPT uses radio frequency technology to heat the deep, collagen rich layers of your skin. The heat helps tighten existing collagen and stimulate the formation of new collagen, which reduces sagging, contours, and improves the smoothness and texture of the skin’s surface.

-How long does treatment take?
Fraxel Dual treatment usually takes around 1 hour, however, this time varies depending on the size of the area we are treating and how significant the damage is. When you come in for your treatment appointment, we will put a topical numbing gel on your face and let it set for 1 ½ hours. Also, we will give you medicine to help make your experience as comfortable as possible. Because of this, we ask that you arrange transportation. We can not give you medicine if you do not have a driver to take you home. After the numbing gel and medicine has completely taken effect, your treatment will begin and will last approximately 1 hour. As soon as the treatment is completed, we will clean off your face and then you may go home. Your entire visit with us during your treatment appointments will be around 3 hours. As far as your entire treatment plan, you will come in approximately every 6 weeks. The amount of treatments in a plan varies depending on your skin’s condition but most patients start with a 4 treatment plan.

-How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatments you will need depends on how significant your skin damage is and we will need to see you for a consultation in order to determine your treatment plan and price for that plan. In general, most patients start with at least a 4 treatment package. A series of treatments is necessary to give you significant results. Fraxel Dual is not a one treatment fix and is designed to be a gradual process so that your skin can adjust and heal itself.

-What parts of the body can Fraxel Dual treat?
Fraxel Dual can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and even larger body parts such as the legs.

-What kind of results can I expect?
After your Fraxel Dual treatment plan is completed, you can expect to have softer, brighter skin with a more even skin tone and improved texture. Brown spots and fine lines and acne scars will be reduced as well. Results from the treatment are progressive meaning the next 3-6 months following your treatment, you will notice more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal. Results can last for years depending on your age and skin condition. Keep in mind sun exposure (especially without sunscreen) can affect your results negatively so you want to be sure and protect your investment.

-What will I look like following the procedure?
You will experience redness and swelling after the procedure, resembling a significant sunburn. This usually subsides around day 3. Over the next several weeks, you will experience flaking and peeling of the skin. This is a good thing! This means it is working!

-Does it hurt?
Fraxel Dual is performed in-office. Our patients are given oral pain medicine and topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Additionally, the Fraxel Dual is enhanced by a chiller device to help cool and reduce swelling during the procedure. You will feel an increased sensation of heat but it is not necessarily painful. Some of our patients even fall asleep during the treatment. We are sure to make it as comfortable as we can for you.

-Who performs the procedure?
Our extensively trained RN’s perform the procedure.

-Can I get a Fraxel Dual treatment instead of a facelift?
Fraxel Dual can resurface damaged skin but it will not offer the dramatic results of a facelift. Fraxel Dual is wonderful to use before or after a facelift to give you maximum improvement of your facial appearance.

We usually set patients up with an initial evaluation by one of our RN’s to evaluate your skin and determine if Fraxel Dual might be effective for you. This evaluation is free.
